There may have been tears on the carpet at the Turnberry Hotel on Sunday night as five-time Open golf champion and fans' favourite Tom Watson failed to make their dream come true, but the resort's GBP40m makeover won overwhelming praise.
Architects 3DReid, with offices in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Falkirk, worked with interior designers Fox Linton to complete the refurbishment of the iconic building back to its original grandeur. Works on the listed building, now owned by Leisurecorp, included the restoration of the ground-floor public areas, 44 ocean-view bedrooms and suites and the grand tea room, with the addition of a new sports bar, Duel in the Sun.
3DReid was responsible for finalising the design brief and masterplan, working with heritage consultants PDA in achieving planning, listed-building consent and building warrants, all to very tight timescales.
Project leader Mark Bruce said it had been a privilege to be involved in reinvigorating the iconic building. The main contractor was Interserve.
