Go-ahead for £26 million hotel on BBC site

A five star spa hotel costing £26million on part of BBC Scotland's former HQ in Glasgow has been given the go-ahead despite objections from residents.

Planners had previously approved an 85-bedroom hotel and 159 houses on the 5.3 acre site in Queen Margaret Drive.

They have now agreed a new application increasing the number of hotel rooms to 120.

City council planner Iain Davidson said: "At the time of the first application the hotel was speculative. Since then, a hotel group has come along with a five star hotel but it requires more bedrooms."

The site is owned by QMD Hotels Limited, a joint venture between Blackrock International Land and Esk Properties.

A total of 19 people and two community councils objected to the plan, claiming it was unsuitable in a residential area and would result in increased noise and nuisance particularly late at night.

Objectors in the past have claimed the large hotel bar would be capable of seating 400 people.

But, after the planning meeting, Hamilton Hotel Glasgow managing director Heather MacLeod said:

"It is not the sort of establishment where we would be looking to cram in 400 people late at night.

"It is not a bar as such - it is a lounge, a place for people to have afternoon tea, to have lunch, to sit and chat. " The development will involve the restoration of three listed buildings - the James Miller building, the anatomy building of Queen Margaret College and North Park House - and a new bedroom wing.

The work which will create 150 jobs, is expected to start this year and be finished by the end of 2011.
